#NoFairGround is a drawing performance created as part of The Main Complaint, curated by Michaela Limberis for the Centre for the Moving Image at Zeitz Mocaa, Cape Town. The performance consisted of a series of drawing actions attempting to record all the most recent Instagram posts from selected hashtags that draw the Museum space into conversation with the art school and art fair (#cedarcypherfestival, #zeitzmocaa & #capetownartfair). The performance occupied a lab space in the Centre for Photography on the 9, 14 & 15 February 2019. During each session I translated digital Instagram posts into a physical drawn archive over a period of time. The action was broadcast live to the foyer space in the museum. The drawn archive was visible in the lab space as a growing collection while also being re-posted onto Instagram (assisted by Nazeer Jappie). By creating a crude double/translation of an ever-updating digital archive I bring attention to the uncomfortable closeness of the commercial and museum art worlds and questions the role of the museum to preserve contemporary art.
