Data capture_Food Inc. is a varied multiple edition print created in collaboration with Fine Art Print Studio, Warren Editions (June 2014) for clients Yellowwoods Arts. These large-scale prints are a combination of monotype and relief printed elements onto a sized and laminated poly-cotton fabric. A monotype print is the process of painting directly onto a printing surface (plastic, metal or linoleum) and then offsetting the painting onto a substrate (paper or fabric) by pressure through a printing press. In this case the monotype layer is generated from painting through a projection of the documentary film Food Inc.(Robert Kenner. 2008). Food Inc. is a film based on Eric Schlosser’s book Fast Food Nation and is a critical reflection on the food industry In America. I chose this movie in response to the fact that one of the clients commissioning the print editions is an international fast food company. In the attempt to capture the moving image, as it appears projected onto the monotype surface, an abstract layered field of colour and brush marks develops. Through the action of watching the film footage repeatedly in order to generate the edition of fifteen prints, the prints reflect an immediacy of the emotional engagement with the challenging subject matter, while the mechanical repetition of the varied multiple also incorporates a kind of fast food consumption into the printing process as the recognizable film image dissolves into a chaotic mix of colour. The relief layer is generated from ink brushstrokes painted onto the linoleum and then cut in relief and printed over the monotype.
